Buffalo Creek Mountain Bike Trail
Pine, Colorado
Buffalo Creek Mountain Bike Trail is remarkable. The climb on Buffalo Creek road is nice and stable as it follows the stream up. Baldy trail takes you through some burned out sections of forest and over a short stretch of slick rock as you near the top of the climb The single-track down hills on this trail are amazing, especially Charlie's Cutoff with more slick rock sections and some hairy turns through some cool rock formations. Sandy Wash has some nice banked turns and some technical sections near the top. When you're back down to the road you'll be amazed at how much downhill you got out of that easy little climb.
Arastradero Preserve Mountain Bike Trail
Palo Alto, California
Arastradero Preserve Mountain Bike Trail is a perfect park for beginner mountain bikers or a short after-work ride. It is perfect for riding with people of different skill levels. It is a very easy path and got some great scenery. There are maps available at the parking lot and the trails are all very well marked. From the parking lot, cross Arastradero Rd for the majority of the trails. The trails are mostly double track/fire- road with short single track shoot-offs. Nothing technical here, just 1-2 climbs that will get your blood pumping. Check out the "bowl" off the bowl loop where you drop in a steep but open section of trail and a few cranks in high gear will carry you out the bowl.
Biltmore Trails Mountain Bike Trail
Asheville, North Carolina
These trails are only avaiable to people staying or visiting the Biltmore. The trails vary in difficulty and types from flat gravel/paved roads to some pretty sweet fast single-track. The Arbor Trace trail and Black Diamond trail behind the Inn are fun and make a 90 minute ride. Trails are well marked. Loop Arbor Trace through the trees, up some nice climbs and come back the way you came once you've done the loop past the farm. Then hit the Green trail as it runs up behind the outdoor center to the left and climb an access road and you'll see a sign leading to the black trail behind the old Chicken coop. There is also a green trail off to the right and a blue trail access of it, about a mile in Tsali. The green is ride able with a hybrid bike.
Slickrock Mountain Bike Trail
Moab, Utah
This trail is probably the most well known mountain bike trail in the country. It is definitely unique due to the tread (rock) and the desolate landscape that surrounds the area. The trail is full of short steep climbs and descents and will really work your legs out. Plan on taking a few hours (3-4) to ride the loop all the way around. If you plan on hitting this trail in the summer be sure to get there real early before it starts getting unbearably hot. Don't even think of trying to do this trail in the evening because it will still be just as hot due to the enormous heat capacity of the rocks. the trail is unique and is perfect for mountain bikers looking for a trail that is totally different from anywhere else they have ridden.
